The Legal Practitioners’ Liability Committee (LPLC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mary Maini as LPLC’s new Chief Executive Officer from 6 January 2025.
Mary is a qualified lawyer with a wealth of experience in the insurance industry in both legal and leadership roles. She has worked in senior roles at IAG, TAL, the NSW State Insurance Regulatory Authority and icare, and most recently has managed her own consulting business.
“I am honoured to be appointed to this role and energised by the opportunity to lead LPLC, a respected organisation that provides essential support to both the legal profession and consumers of legal services”, said Mary.
Mary’s appointment comes after a rigorous recruitment process following the announcement some months ago by current CEO, Justin Toohey, of his desire to call ‘time’ at LPLC and move on to new challenges. Justin has dedicated a large part of his career to LPLC having spent 7 years as CEO and 13 years prior as Deputy CEO and Head of Claims.
LPLC Chair, Michelle Dixon, said that “The Committee is delighted by the appointment of Mary. Her strong record in executive roles in the insurance industry, combined with the existing team of dedicated and skilled staff, will ensure that LPLC continues to deliver a secure and sustainable insurance scheme. Justin has provided LPLC with brilliant leadership for the past 7 years, and the opportunity is now there for Mary to continue LPLC’s fine tradition of service to the profession”.
Justin is equally optimistic. “LPLC is a fantastic organisation to work with, we do important work supporting practitioners, upholding the integrity of the profession and safeguarding consumers of legal services, and this is now a great opportunity for Mary to take the organisation into the future”, he said.
2025 will mark LPLC’s 40th year providing high quality, dependable professional indemnity insurance and risk management services to Victorian solicitors and barristers and to many of Australia’s national law firms. Operating under a not-for-profit statutory mutual model, LPLC insures more than 25,000 practitioners in 7,000 law practices and is committed to helping them reduce risks that cause claims.
